Workforce Development for Emerging Industries

New Construction

The hospitality industry in Prince George’s County is booming. The development of National Harbor, the $1.3 billion MGM National Harbor resort, and numerous new restaurants, retail and entertainment venues have transformed the county into a major destination. The rapid growth of the hospitality industry has resulted in the need for a well-prepared workforce ready to fill vacancies. Prince George’s Community College is often the first stop for businesses coming into the county seeking qualified workers. When MGM National Harbor sought to recruit 3,600 new employees for its high-end casino complex, it partnered with Prince George’s Community College to develop a hospitality program. Now, the college is raising the standard with the construction of a contemporary Culinary Arts Center (CAC) occupying 21,550 square feet and schedules to open during the spring of 2018. The new building will feature:

  • Front of house/back of house design for real-world instruction
  • Specialized instructional kitchens with professional grade equipment
  • Community kitchen for continuing education classes in cooking and nutrition
  • Display kitchen for demonstrations and tastings by staff and visiting chefs
  • Beverage management lab for training in bar operations, mixology and barista services
